They will use 2D materials such as paint and markers to decorate the interior and exterior of their box. Then, they will use model magic clay to create 3D objects to place in their box that tells their story.

Essential Understanding:

Inquiry/Learning Target:

Students can use art to tell a personal story.

Key Concepts:

  • Symbol

  • Three-dimensional Composition

  • Form

Students are recording their ideas in their sketchbooks.

Documentation:

Below shows photos and videos that show student discovery in their own art-making process.

This video below shows a student explaining her sketch to plan what she will include in her story box. She describes how she lost her tooth and points to items such as a bowl of pasta that she is going to include in her box. She is telling about her own experience to create art.

In the videos below, two students make discoveries about watercolor. The first student was concerned because he wanted to paint his box gray, however, there was no gray watercolor. He discovered that the black watercolor will dry lighter which creates gray. He also discovered that adding more water makes the black gray.

The second student is questioning how to make a darker blue. He experimented with the paint and then realized that adding a second coat of paint makes it darker.

"When the black dries out it's going to turn into gray!"

"Less water makes it lighter and more water makes it darker

In the video below the student explains the drawing she made in her sketchbook and her  story of how she lost her tooth. This video demonstrates that this student is successfully recording her ideas in her sketchbook.
